Toyota Corolla Hybrid vs Petrol for Fleets: Fuel Use, Power and Which to Import
WLTC figures for every China-market Corolla engine compared side by side, a worked fuel calculation for a 100,000 km year, and when the 1.2T, 1.5L or 2.0L petrol is the better buy.

For high-mileage fleets — taxi, ride-hailing, delivery — the 1.8L Corolla Hybrid is usually the better import: it uses about 30% less fuel than the 1.2T petrol on the WLTC cycle and needs no charging. The petrol versions win when purchase price matters most, when fuel is cheap, or when local workshops are not yet comfortable with hybrids.
How do the engines compare?
All figures below come from the China-market specification. WLTC is the Worldwide harmonised Light vehicles Test Cycle defined under UN Global Technical Regulation No. 15; real-world use varies with traffic, load and climate.
| Engine | Output | WLTC L/100 km | Tank | Model years |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.8 L hybrid (8ZR-FXE + 70 kW motor) | 101 kW (137 PS) | 4.06–4.45 | 43 L | 2024, 2025, 2026 |
| 1.5 L petrol, 3-cyl. (M15B) | 89 kW (121 PS) | 5.41 | 47 L | 2024 |
| 1.2 L turbo petrol | 85 kW (116 PS) | 5.88–6.13 | 50 L | 2024, 2025, 2026 |
| 2.0 L petrol (M20E) | 126 kW (171 PS) | 6.08 | 50 L | 2026 |
| Corolla Cross 2.0 L hybrid (M20G + 83 kW motor) | 144 kW (196 PS) | 4.56 | 36 L | 2026 |
| Corolla Cross 2.0 L petrol (M20E) | 126 kW (171 PS) | 6.42 | 47 L | 2026 |
How much fuel does a hybrid save over a year?
Take a taxi that covers 100,000 km a year. At the WLTC figures, a 2025 Corolla Hybrid (4.06 L/100 km) would use about 4,060 litres; a 2025 Corolla 1.2T (5.88 L/100 km) about 5,880 litres. That is roughly 1,800 litres a year per car. Multiply by your local pump price and fleet size to see the payback on the hybrid’s higher purchase price. City driving usually favours the hybrid even more, because it recovers energy when braking.
When is petrol the better choice?
- Lowest purchase price: the 2026 Corolla 1.2T Pioneer is the entry trim of the 2026 sedan range.
- Simplest mechanicals: the 2024 Corolla 1.5L has no turbo, no hybrid battery and a torsion-beam rear axle.
- Power and highway use: the 2026 Corolla 2.0L gives 171 PS — the most in the range — on the longer 2,750 mm wheelbase.
- Cheap fuel markets: where petrol is heavily subsidised, the hybrid’s fuel saving takes longer to pay back.
Does the hybrid need charging?
No. The Corolla Hybrid is a self-charging hybrid (HEV), not a plug-in. Its lithium-ion battery is charged by the engine and by braking, so it refuels at a normal petrol station — important in markets where public charging is rare.
Which hybrid model year should I choose?
The 2026 Hybrid has 50 mm more wheelbase and larger screens; the 2025 Hybrid has the lowest WLTC figure (4.06 L/100 km); the 2024 Hybrid offers three trims up to a Flagship with heated seats. See the full comparison in 2024 vs 2025 vs 2026 Corolla.
